CC Art Talk 17:00–18:00

SEIZURE / Marianna Simnett

On 15 May, we will host an art talk with the artist Marianna Simnett arranged jointly by CC and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. With her artist colleague Ed Atkins as moderator, Simnett will talk about her artistic practice with reference to her exhibition, SEIZURE, currently showing at CC.

SEIZURE is Simnett’s first solo exhibition in Scandinavia and presents two of Simnett’s most captivating works where the body is either transformed or disappears for a time. In the monumental light installation Faint with Light and the video work The Needle and the Larynx, the artist challenges traditional perceptions of body and gender via a series of changes to her own body. Simnett’s works calls for the physical presence of the visitor so as to provide access to some of the things we tend to suppress. The exhibition may serve as a reminder of how our unconsciousness possesses a power that may suddenly find expression.

Ed Atkins, who will moderate this art talk, is employed as a visiting professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts where he is currently working on the research project, Mortality and Experience in Contemporary Digital Representation. Ed Atkins and Marianna Simnett know each other from London where they were both educated at the Slade School of Fine Arts.

The Art Talk will be in English – everyone is welcome!

Atkins has exhibited several times in Denmark and is currently employed as a visiting professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he is working on the research project Mortality and experience in contemporary digital representation.

Marianna Simnett presents SEIZURE, her first exhibition in Denmark, bringing together her large-scale installation Faint with Light and video work The Needle and the Larynx in Hall 3 at Copenhagen Contemporary.
In Faint with Light, Simnett performs a cycle of self-induced fainting attacks, transposed into a powerful light and sound installation that viscerally confronts us with our own breathing and fragile bodies.
In The Needle and the Larynx (2016), Simnett once again subjects her body to an invasive procedure. A voice surgeon injects Botox into her larynx, which effectively paralyses the muscles responsible for pitch and causes her voice to deepen for several months. In her mesmerizing installation Faint with Light and video parable The Needle and the Larynx, normative bodies and genders undergo radical transformations. The artist’s own body, mutated and remodeled, becomes a site for playing out her hypnotic fantasies.
